First, I've got to come up at least a working description of what a boy band is so that I can determine what groups I want to feature in my (hopefully) book.
1) An all male group
2) 3 or more members
3) Must have die hard fans
4) The groups image will be found plastered to the walls of their fans bedrooms, notebooks, t-shirts, lunch boxes, etc.
5) The groups image is marketed to teen-agers, young adults, pre-teens, tweens, etc.
6) All the members sing
7) The members can both sing songs they wrote themselves or by someone else
8) May or may not dance.
9) Each member must have a unique identity, so that a fan can pick out his/her favorite.
10) Must have a live performance history

- Musician, music educator, ethno/musicologist, collector and music appreciator extraordinaire. I love everything from Renaissance vocal music, bollywood and afrobeat to heavy metal, 1950s schlock rock and Justin Timberlake. I have a master's degree in Ethnomusicology from The University of Texas at Austin and undergrad degrees in Music History and History from the University of Michigan. I wrote my master's thesis on Gospel Brunch in Austin, Texas and the commercialization of gospel music. I am a vocalist and also play the guitar, piano and am currently learning to play the Chinese Ruan (sounds sorta like a classical guitar but looks like a banjo). I've sung for a band that opened for the Neville Brothers, sung in Chartres Cathedral twice, and at Yoshi's in San Francisco.
